VELMA SMITH Obituary

Velma Farber Smith was born June 2, 1931 to the late Lila and Julius Farber. She passed away quietly in her home, surrounded by family on September 13, 2014. Velma grew up in Scranton with her brother Leonard Zachary Farber. She graduated from Scranton Central High School.

Velma married the love of her life, Harold "Snuffy" Smith. They enjoyed 34 happy years. Together they had four children, Judith F. Smith, David Smith, Gail S. Appelbaum and Beth E. Kaplan.
Known as Nana to her family and friends, Velma's happy place was in the kitchen, where she could always be found whipping up something tasty, nibbling on a little lemon merengue pie, or sipping a glass of Merlot! Her family will not only remember her through her sweet songs, but also through her famous brisket, pasta salad, and veal marsala.

Velma kept care of the books for the family upholstery and foam supply business, The Smith Company, and after her beloved Snuff passed in 1987, she continued to run the show.

Velma was the Nana to eleven lucky ones, Haley and Brooke Appelbaum, Hillary and Diana Smith, Reuven Tzvi, Yehuda Sholom, Shlomo Zalman, Leah, Sarah, Ben Tzion, and Moshe Kaplan. She was the mother-in-law to Ellen Smith and Gary Appelbaum, and the sister-in-law to Cindy Farber. Her nieces and nephews were Ronni and Jason Mendelsohn, Faye and Victor Bosch, and Lindsay and Jay Farber, and great-nieces and nephews Lauren, Ryan, and Adam Mendelsohn and Ava Farber. She fell under the tender loving care of Ann Rifkin, Jeanne Schoenholtz, Debbie and Keith Lowe, as well as Dr. Stephen Rudnick.

The funeral service will be graveside today at 2:30 p.m. at the Temple Israel Cemetery.

Shiva be held at the home of David and Ellen Smith in Shavertown Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. and Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
