Shirley B. Klein, daughter of M.D. and Gertrude Brandwene was a truly remarkable woman. She was a leader and role model in Wilkes-Barre for many years as President of Hadassah, League of Women's Voters, and Temple Israel Sisterhood. She was awarded the Seligman Strauss Award for distinguished community service in 1967. She was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Wyoming Seminary and attended Simmons College. As a life long learner, she graduated Cum Laude from Wilkes University at the same time her son Bill was a student there.
She had many interests including tennis, bridge and golf. She was the only one in the family to have a hole-in-one. Her home was always open to everyone and she loved to entertain.
Shirley's greatest passion was her husband, Joe, who passed away two years ago. They celebrated 76 years together and their relationship grew even stronger when Joe retired and moved to Longboat Key, Florida where they enjoyed their retirement together. They shared many of the same interests, especially their love of the Ashcan School of Art.
Shirley is survived by her son Bill and daughter-in-law, Margie, two grandchildren, Jodi (Greg) and Michael (Alicia) and five great-grandchildren, Drew, Dillon, Peyton, Erin and Samantha. She is also survived by her brother Harold Brandwene of Kingston, PA. Her son Robert predeceased her.
Graveside services will be held Friday, August 11th at Temple Israel Cemetery on Dennison St., Swoyersville at 11AM. The family will be greeting friends at The Woodlands following the internment. Shivah will take place in Philadelphia at the home of Bill and Margie on Sunday, August 13that 7:00 PM.
