SANDRA FELDMAN Obituary

Sandra S. Feldman, 82, of Pittston, PA, passed away Monday, December 19, 2022, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Washington, DC on January 18, 1940, she was a daughter of the late Louis Feldman and Betty Tracht Feldman. A graduate of Kingston High School and Wilkes College, Sandy, as she was called by her friends, had a thirty-five year elementary school teaching career in Kingston, Groton, CT, and the Wilkes-Barre Area School Districts.

Once Sandy retired, she spent the next thirty years as a community volunteer with numerous charity and civic organizations. Some of these include the American Cancer Society, where she served on the Board of Directors and Board of Governors; the Arthritis Foundation, Board of Directors; the Hoyt Library, Board of the Friends of the Hoyt Library; RSVP; Maternal and Family Health Services (MFHS); Head Start, CEO Summer Lunch Program; Meals on Wheels; St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen; the Fine Arts Fiesta; the Family Service Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania (FSANEPA). Sandy was the recipient of the Rose Allen Tucker Volunteer Award for her work with Maternal Health. She received the Albert N. Danoff Trustees Humanitarian Award from FSANEPA for her commitment to making the community a better place. Sandy volunteered wherever she was needed, received great personal satisfaction in helping improve people’s lives, and along the way, made lifetime friendships.

Sandy’s love of the theater made her a committed Broadway show attendee. She loved nothing better than a days outing to NYC to shop, see the latest fashions, absorb the hustle and bustle of city life, and go to the latest Broadway show, either musical or drama. Her love of the arts brought her to see Shakespearean plays, art museums, and movies. She loved it all.

Books played a huge role in Sandy’s life. Always on the lookout for a new one, she loved her trips to Barnes & Noble to sit and read, have a cup of decaf. Her commitment to the Hoyt Library in Kingston started early. From her childhood long walks to pick up summer reading to her becoming a member of the Board of Directors, she knew the possibilities reading could bring. She belonged to several book clubs, always had a stack of books waiting to be read, and loved the interaction with the other book club members.

Travel brought Sandy great joy. From London theater trips to her farthest adventure in Australia, she always loved the planning and excitement of new places and people. When one trip ended, she started planning the next.

Sandy’s calendar reflected her life. The boxes were filled with charitable activities, lunch dates with dear friends, travel plans. Her friendships stretched far and wide. She loved connecting with people, sharing their lives through the good times and the difficult times. She always reached out to keep in touch, and her friends, in turn, reached out to her during her many health challenges.

Sandy is survived by her sister, Serene Feldman Werblood, and her brother-in law, Mark Werblood, of Alexandria, Virginia, her many friends who will greatly miss her, and numerous cousins, since Sandy’s dad was one of thirteen children and her mom was one of seven.
