ROSE HANOVICE Obituary

Rose Hanovice, 96, passed away at home on Thursday, August 8, 2024, with her family by her side. She was a beloved wife, devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Rose was a true Renaissance woman with a positive attitude and a beautiful spirit. She engaged friends and family alike with her warmth, sense of humor, and intellect. She was fluent in six languages, mostly self-taught, and conversant in several others. She was an avid reader with an incredible memory. She read the New York Times cover to cover every day and loved doing crossword puzzles. She was passionate about and well versed in classical music and opera. She also enjoyed following professional sports, especially tennis.

Rose, neé Rosa, was born in Sofia, Bulgaria to Esther and Nissim Behar. At the age of three, she moved with her family to Paris, France, where Rose attended Catholic school. After the Nazis invaded Paris, the nuns repeatedly protected her from deportation to the concentration camps. In 1940, Rose and her family moved back to Sofia, barely escaping the Nazi round up of Jews in Paris. At the age of sixteen, Rose left Bulgaria without her family and traveled with a youth group to Israel, which was the only legal immigration the British Mandate permitted. Her parents and siblings followed after the war.

While in Israel, Rose lived on a Kibbutz, then went to nursing school, and became a Lieutenant in the Israeli army. While in nursing school, she met the love of her life, David Hanovice. They married two years later, moved to New York, and raised their family of five children. She learned how to make a Jewish home from her neighbors, most of whom survived the Holocaust. Rose and David raised their children with a strong Zionist identity, teaching them the importance of family and love. Having lived in France, Bulgaria, Israel, New York, and New Jersey, she lived in Edwardsville, Pa. for the last eighteen years of her life.

Rose was preceded in death by David, her husband of 57 years, sons Samuel and Joel, son-in-law Dr. Robert Engel, parents, brothers, and many in-laws.

Rose leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughters: Tammy Engel, Karen Hogan and her husband Jeff; grandchildren: Daniel and Christa Engel, Caroline and Jacob Miskabi, Benjamin Engel, Rose and Patrick Varin, Sami Ann, Jack, Mathew, Ryan, and Tyler Hogan; and great- grandchildren: Zev Engel and Madeline Miskabi; as well as many friends and relatives.

The family is grateful to Rose's caregiver, Beth Deguzman Tiu, for five years of compassionate care and companionship. Her medical team, Dr. Bruce Saidman, the staff of Medical Oncology Associates, Renal Consultants, Dr. Ray Joseph, Nicole Dominick, CRNP, Dr. Paul Rutkowski, and Erwine's Home Hospice, provided Rose with many years of exceptional care.

Rose touched countless lives and will be missed by all who knew her.

Private graveside funeral services were held on Sunday, August 11th at Temple Israel Cemetery, Swoyersville, Pa. Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
