Phylis Fischer

Phylis Fischer, of Pittsburgh, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2026. She was born in Wilkes-Barre on February 25, 1934, the daughter of the late Joseph and Ethel Levy Pollack.

Phylis was a graduate of G.A.R. High School and earned her bachelor’s degree from The Pennsylvania State University.  In 1957, she married Theodore Fischer and they had a beautiful loving marriage for 55 years until her husband passed away in 2012. Phylis spent over 20 years raising their two children while helping her husband operate the Maltby Drug Store in Swoyersville, PA. When both of her children left for college, Phylis worked as a sales and marketing analyst at InterMetro Industries for close to 20 years. 

Phylis was deeply devoted to her family, friends and to the community she called home. She was a life member of Congregation Ohav Zedek and its Sisterhood and served as a past board member. She was also a member of Hadassah, the Jewish Community Center, the JCC Teen Committee, among others. She gave generously of her time and energy, and took pride in being part of the organizations and communities she cared about.

She is survived by her sons, Stuart Fischer and his wife, Sheri (Vienna VA), and Gary Fischer and his wife, Margaret (Pittsburgh); three grandchildren, Joseph (Richmond, VA), Dov (Seattle, WA), and Ana (Pittsburgh); and her nephew, Robert Rifkin (Laguna Nigel, CA).

Phylis will be remembered with great love by her family and friends for her warmth, intelligence, generosity, and enduring spirit. She treasured the people in her life and the many relationships she built over the years.

Her family will always cherish the memories of her—her caring presence, her devotion to those she loved, and her kindness to all that she met.

Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Inc., 348 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre with Rabbi David Kaplan officiating. Interment will follow in Ohav Zedek Cemetery, Hanover Twp. The family will be receiving visitors at Congregation Ohav Zedek, 242 S Franklin St, Wilkes-Barre, immediately following the funeral, from 5:30 to 7 pm.
