Melvin W. Farkas, of Laflin and Delray Beach, FL, died Tuesday afternoon, December 10, 2013.
Born in Nanticoke, he was the son of the late Samuel and Fannie Mermelstein Farkas and was a graduate of Nanticoke High School and Wilkes College. Mel served in the United State Army during the Korean War and was self employed as a Certified Public Accountant in Wilkes-Barre. He was a member of Congregation Ohav Zedek, the former United Orthodox Synagogue, Temple Israel, the Jewish Community Center and other civic, religious and professional organizations.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Gloria Fierverker.
Mr. Farkas is survived by his wife, the former Irene Bynsky; Suzanne Collins and her husband, Dave, Charlotte, NC; Davida Kleinman and her husband, Dr. Michael Kleinman, Doylestown, PA; Mindy Eitan and her husband Gil, Lake Worth, FL; five grandchildren, Jenna Collins, Joshua Collins, Mara Kleinman, Leah Kleinman and Molly Eitan and close nieces and nephews, Martin Pezzner, Laurie Levin, Dr. Ira Goodman, Marsha Parker, Dr. Alan Fierverker and Caren Borochok.
Graveside funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, December 13, 2013, in Anshe Emes Cemetery, Plains, with Rabbi Raphael Nemetsky officiating.
Arrangements by Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, 348 S. River Street, Wilkes-Barre.
Shiva will be observed at 25 Fairfield Drive, Laflin, 3-4 pm Friday, 6-8 pm Saturday; and 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm, Sunday through Tuesday, and 12 to 1 pm Wednesday.
