LEONARD CHERNUS Obituary

Leonard "Len" Chernus, 91, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at Tiffany Court in Kingston, PA.

Born June 19, 1926 in Newark, NJ to the late Benjamin and Natalie (Lipsker) Chernus, Len is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy "Debby" (Feldman) Chernus. Len was predeceased by their daughter, Sue (married to Larry Brendle and the late Samuel Hausbach). Len is also survived by his children, Roy (married to Renee), Jo, and Jack (married to Janice); by his grandchildren, Robert (married to Tonya), Benjamin, and Philip Hausbach (married to Melissa); Eric (married to Elizabeth), David (married to Crystal Reed), Natalie (engaged to Kyle Stack), and Aaron Chernus (engaged to Colleen Kronebusch); and by his great-grandchildren, Isabella, Abrielle, Madeline, Jackson, Elliott, Franklynn, and Elliana.

Len was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as an officer in the South Pacific in 1945-46 and then in the Navy reserves for 23 years before retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. He was also a proud graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont with a BA in 1948.

After his service in World War II, Len worked as a civilian for U.S. Naval Intelligence. Len then worked for many years as the Sales Manager at Clinton Square Wholesale Distributors in East Orange, NJ, and later as a Catalog Merchandiser for Jewelcor in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Len always served his community. He was on the Board of Directors of the Eastern Union County YM-YWHA serving as the first President of its Couples Club and chairing its Camp Committee. He also chaired the Board of Directors for Boy Scouts Troop 14 (Union Council). In his later years, Len volunteered with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) delivering meals to the homebound and performed other significant volunteer activities earning a 15-year pin. Len was also a frequent blood donor.

Len was a long-time member of Temple Israel Synagogue in Wilkes Barre, PA and its Minyanaires.

Len and Debby in retirement traveled in their 29 foot Motor home to 49 states and most provinces of Canada frequently with grandchildren from both coasts. They also visited Hawaii for their 40th anniversary to make it to all 50 states.

A graveside funeral service, arranged by Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2017, at 1:00 pm at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Iselin, NJ with Rabbi Kaplan officiating.

The family thanks Hospice of The Sacred Heart (www.hospicesacredheart.org) for their loving, compassionate care of Len and requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to this excellent organization.
