Jean Schiowitz

The Schiowitz family mourns Jean Fuerth Schiowitz, an enduring icon, so dear to generations of our family, who gently passed away in her home on July 15, 2026. Beautiful, fashionable, and informed, she was unfailingly polite and thoughtful of others, a true lady. Despite that, with flexibility and a great sense of humor, Jean accommodated the sometimes-colorful language of her family and laughed along with them. She was also a good sport when the jokes were turned on her. Among her many qualities, was the ability to be not just a confidant or advisor, but to be a true friend to younger members of the family. She was loved for that capacity. With all that, a quiet determination and an occasional stubborn streak lurked.

Jean was born on May 26, 1928 in Wilkes-Barre to Nan and Mose Fuerth, attending city schools, graduating from Meyers High school, where among other things, she sang and was a cheerleader. She graduated from Weylister Junior College (University of Bridgeport) and was employed by Bell Telephone. She married Dr. Albert Schiowitz and raised four children. She and her husband were fortunate to travel extensively. Jean tolerated golf and enjoyed tennis. She cooked and baked very well but used immediate family as test subjects for new recipes. At those times, husband Al was said to have put Burger King on standby. She and Al loved to dance. Jean volunteered at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for many years and drew in a number of her friends to fill the ranks.

Jean was pre-deceased by her parents, sister, Margaret Lewis, and husband, Dr. Al Schiowitz. She bore with difficulty the tragic loss of daughter Jane Schiowitz and later, daughter in law, Terry Schiowitz. She also mourned the death of Howard Rottman who had become a great friend.

Mrs. Schiowitz is survived by daughter, Dr. Nan Schiowitz, and husband Michael Stemmer, Son Dr. Robert (Bert) Schiowitz and wife Dr. Ronit Sugar, son, Dr. Mark Schiowitz, and son in law, Rick Brooks. Our friend Brian Kerr must be mentioned here as well. Her ten grandchildren loved and respected her: David (Natalie), Daniel, and Gabe Stemmer, Adam (Colleen), Amy (Geoff), and Julie Schiowitz, Julian Brooks, Colin (Sara) and Cory (Kimia) Conrad, and Joshua Schiowitz. Jean has great grandchildren Cameron, Miles, Luca, Jonas, June, and Tala.

Youth is strength, but age is wisdom and understanding.

The family extends its thanks to her caregivers who became friends: Tsegie Tedela (Titi), Leanne Wargo, Inga Goglichidze, Inga Kvitsiani, and Mahider Zerga (Mahi).

Funeral: Rosenberg Chapel, 332 S. River Street, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Friday 7/17/2026, 11 am.
