June Kuffler Nelson, a longtime resident of Kingston and Dallas, died November 2, 2014, at the age of 96.
Mrs. Nelson moved to Wilkes-Barre after her 1939 marriage to Charles M Nelson, the former President and Chief Executive Officer of Nelson & Sons, Inc., the furniture manufacturing company based in Kingston. She was active in various charities and nonprofits in the Wilkes-Barre area, including the Temple Israel Congregation Sisterhood, Hadassah, and Planned Parenthood of Northeastern Pennsylvania. She also was a teaching assistant in the Philosophy Department at Wilkes College.
Mrs. Nelson lived in the area until 2004, later living in New York, Key West, Fla., and Newnan, Ga. In her later years, she wrote several books of poetry, and often read her poems in coffee houses in Key West.
She was the daughter of Harry Armin Kuffler and Fannie Gottlieb Kuffler of New York, N.Y., and grew up in New York. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Barnard College.
She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Nelson Brown of Newnan, Ga., and Sara Nelson of New York, N.Y, and two sons, Stephen Kuffler Nelson of Washington, D.C., and Jonathan Michael Nelson of New Hope, Pa.
Burial service will be on Sunday, November 9, at 3pm at the Temple Israel Cemetery on Dennison Street in Swoyersville, Pa.
