HELENE "HINDY" KAUFER

Helene (Hindy) Kaufer, 87, of Laflin, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at Timber Ridge Health Care, where she has been a resident since November.

She was the daughter of the late Abraham and Lillian Levine Kaplan and was a 1946 graduate of GAR High School and attended Bucknell Jr. College, which then became Wilkes College. Before she had children, Hindy was the bookkeeper for the family business, Kaplan's Furniture. She was also active in many organizations, such as, Hadassah, JCC and Fox Hill County Club, where she enjoyed dinners, playing golf, and socializing with close friends. She was also involved with many other volunteer, civic and religious organizations. When she wasn't golfing or playing with her grandchildren, Hindy could be found playing Maj Jong or poker with her weekly group of friends.

Prior to her illness, Hindy and Irv were snow bird residents of Lauderdale By The Sea, Florida where they also belonged to the Fort Lauderdale Country Club. They loved spending their winters together walking on the beach, playing golf, entertaining and relaxing by the pool.

Hindy was preceded in death by her sisters, Baby Sondra Kaplan and Marilyn Saidman.

She is survived by her loving husband, Irving, her high school sweetheart and caretaker, with whom she would have shared their 68th Wedding Anniversary on March 21st. Also surviving are her daughters and sons in law, Gloria and Geoffrey Greene, Columbia, MD; Terri and David Mayers, Wilkes-Barre; Pam and Bill Dixon, Mountain Top; grandchildren, Dylan, Trevor, Jared and Stacey Greene, Ryan and Matthew Mayers and Skyler and Mallory Dixon, 9 great grandchildren.

Graveside funeral service will be at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, in Anshe Emes Cemetery, Rear 6 Blanchard Street, Plains, 18705. Rabbi Dovid Kaplan will officiate.

Shiva will be observed at The Woodlands, Immediately following the funeral service on Wednesday; 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Thursday; and 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Friday.
