It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the death of Harold Leroy Landau, a lifelong resident of Kingston, PA until he was convinced by his children to reside closer to them by relocating to Teaneck, NJ several years ago. He died peacefully Sunday, June 28, 2015 at the age of 87. It is impossible to capture the magnitude of who he was as a person, a husband, a father, a son, a brother. He was a gentle soul. He was a good man. He knew how to live life and how to make the best of all that was around him.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA on September 12, 1927, he was the son of the late Isadore and Jennie Schwartz Landau. He received his undergraduate degree from John Hopkins University and his Masters Degree in History from the University of Scranton. Harold owned and operated Landau's of Plymouth, a family-owned furniture store for over 40 years prior to retiring. He worked side by side with his father. Harold lived and instilled in his family the tenets of a good life, a Jewish life, filled with acts of goodness to others, charity and tikkun olam ("healing the world"). He was active in the local community, serving as Rotary Club president and remaining active on various business round tables. He was especially involved in the Jewish Community, active and invested in Temple Israel and the Jewish Community Center in Wilkes-Barre where he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He had the perfect balance of work, family and community. In his free time, he loved golfing, tennis, traveling, and just being with family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, the former Phyllis Moskowitz; daughter, Jodi Ryan and her husband, John of Montvale, NJ and their children, Jennifer and Matthew; son, Dr. Jeffrey Landau and his wife, Robin of West Hartford, CT and their children, Arielle and Dylan; daughter, Audrey Flynn and her husband, Stephen, of Allendale, NJ and their children, Harrison, Arden and Olivia; son, Kevin Landau and his wife, Wendy, of New York City and their children, Chloe and Hudson and sister, Sally Zinman of Wayne, PA.
Funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at 2:00 pm at the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Inc. 348 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre, with Rabbi Larry Kaplan officiating. Interment will be in Temple Israel Cemetery, Swoyersville.
Local Shiva will be observed at the Woodlands Inn and Resort in Wilkes-Barre, PA immediately following internment from approximately 4:30-8 pm.
Memorial contributions, may be made to Temple Israel, JCC of Wyoming Valley or National Parkinson Foundation.
