Gary Sandler, 66, of Hanover Township, passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2022.
Gary grew up in Bethpage, New York. He graduated from Wilkes College summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in psychology, and obtained a master's degree in the field of social work at the University of Pittsburgh. He worked in the mental health field. He was hired by Meadville Medical Center and became Director of Mental Health Services where he worked for 13 years. In 1999 he moved to Long Island and worked for the VA Medical Center in Northport, NY. He retired from the VA medical Center in 2014.
Gary had a lifelong love of music. He sang at his Bar Mitzvah, and as a young adult, sang and played guitar in bands formed with friends. He attended many, many concerts with his wife, Bernardette and friends in various cities in the northeast, midwest and south.
When he and Bernadette became life partners, he became a part of a large family whom he embraced, and who welcomed him with open arms.
Gary's friends remember him for his musical talent, insight, compassion, loyalty; all with a good dose of subtle humor.
He was predeceased by his parents, Frank (Francis) and Fran (Frances) Sandler, and his grandson Justin.
He is survived by his wife, Berndaeete, daughters, Elizabeth and Chrissy; sons, George and Jason; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and brother, Michael.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 10, 2022, at 11:00 am from the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Inc. 348 S. River St. Wilkes-Barre with Rabbi Larry Kaplan officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30 am until time of service. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.
