Felice Salsburg, 92, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Sunday, August 3rd after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born in New York City, Felice was the daughter of the late William and Katherine Oxman of New York and North Miami Beach, Florida. As a young woman growing up in New York, Felice was both beautiful and smart, attending the Bronx High School of Science and City College of New York, while working as a model on New York’s Fashion Avenue. She moved to Wilkes-Barre in 1959, and following her divorce from Martin Freeman, she married Joseph H. Salsburg, who preceded her in death.
She graduated from Wilkes College where she also earned a Masters Degree in Education, and taught elementary school Wilkes-Barre from 1973 until her retirement in 1996. She was active in numerous civic causes, from the sisterhood of Temple B’nai Brith, to the Martin Luther King Society; she was a champion of women’s rights, civil rights, and LGBT rights. She marched on Harrisburg and in Washington, and her commitment to community service and volunteerism was an inspiration to both family and friends. For many years, she volunteered annually at the Fine Arts Festival, an event that meant so much to her. As a tribute to her lifetime of service, her children have established the Felice Salsburg Alternative Spring Break for Service Scholarship Fund at Wilkes University, which enables Wilkes students to travel around the world performing volunteer work. An avid card player, she also achieved Life Master status from the
American Contract Bridge League.
She is survived by her children, Jackie Freeman, of Naperville, IL, Brett Freeman (Fern) and Shelley (Joni) Freeman, both of New York, and David Salsburg (Joyce) of Chicago as well as her beloved grandchild Kyle Freeman, also of New York.
There will be a graveside service on August 17, 2025 at 11:00 Am at the Temple B’nai B’rith cemetery; South Main Street, Hanover Township; all who loved Felice are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Wilkes University, Office of Advancement, 84 W. South St. Wilkes-Barre, PA 18766 http://wilkes.edu/give
