Evelyn S. Gurbst, wife, mother, grandmother, and a leader in the field of early childhood development died on April 26, 2017 in her sleep at her home.
Born in New York City on April 2, 1921, Evie as she was known to her friends graduated from New York University and moved to Kingston in 1951 when her husband and best friend Herbie came to work in the Valley.
Devoted to children, Evie was a Director of both the day camp and teen programs at the Jewish Community Center. A pioneer in the development of Head Start and the Child Development Council in 1972, Evelyn Gurbst set an example of dedication and caring for children, that is her legacy.
She is survived by her son and daughter, and three grandchildren. A family only service will be held on Sunday, April 30 at 11:00 a.m. A memorial service for friends will be held, the date and place to be announced.
In the meantime, in Evie's memory, give your kids a hug, and applaud the positive in each of them.
Donations should be directed to the Child Development Council of NEPA.
