ESTHER E. SAIDMAN KAUFER

Mrs. Esther 'Eckie' Kaufer (nee: Saidman) of West Palm Beach, Florida, formerly of Edwardsville, died October 25, 2017 at 93.

She was born in Kingston on January 18, 1924 the daughter of the late Nathan and Sarah (Danoff) Saidman and was the wife of the late Robert Aaron Kaufer. She was a graduate of Kingston High School and earned a nursing degree from Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. Following graduation, she worked as a nurse in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps in a World War II POW hospital and then at the Wilkes Barre General Hospital with her brother, the late Dr. Lester Saidman. Later she worked as the camp nurse at the Jewish Community Center summer camp and at the Pierce Street Bakery. She then joined her husband as co-owner of Stein's Fur Salon in Wilkes-Barre.

After the flood, she and her husband moved to Edwardsville until 2011 when she moved to Florida. Many times after she retired, people would come up and say how they remembered her from when she nursed them or their parents, and several generations remember her as 'Eckie', the camp nurse. In her family, she was known and loved as, 'Aunt Eckie' by all her nieces and nephews.

Her sons, Mark L. Kaufer and Barry Kaufer, her two brothers Lester and Marvin Saidman, and her sister Ruth Malett, preceded her in death. She is survived by her granddaughter Michal Kaufer, Washington D.C, grandson Ilan Kaufer (Stephanie), great grandchildren Asher and Arden, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mrs. Kaufer was a member of the former Anshe Emes and United Orthodox Synagogues and a current member of the Ohav Zedek. She was also a member of the Jewish Community Center and a life member of B'nai Brith Women and Hadassah.

Funeral will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, 348 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre, with Rabbi David Kaplan, officiating. Interment will be in Plains Township at the Anshe Emes Cemetery.

Visitation will be at 4:00 Sunday at the Woodlands Inn and Resort.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in her memory to the Jewish Community Center of Wyoming Valley or the MorseLife Health System Foundation in West Palm Beach.
