Esther Gutin passed away quietly at home on July 17, 2014. Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, she lived in Wilkes-Barre for half a century. She spent the last few years of her life at her daughter's home in Wilmington, Delaware.
Esther's vocation was social work. At age 21 she was helping displaced European war survivors get settled in their new
homes; at age 85 she retired from her private therapy practice. In
between she was the founding director of Counsel House, a partial
hospitalization program that became part of the community mental health center. Esther earned her MSW at the University of Pennsylvania and received and then conducted advanced training in family therapy.
Esther's friends were legion, and she was the matriarch of her family.
She was predeceased by her parents, Misha and Agnes Scholnick; her
brother, David Scholnick; her nephew, Michael Scholnick; and her
grandson, Michael Perri. Her beloved husband, Stanley, passed away in
2011.
Esther is survived by her son, Steven Gutin, of Philadelphia, and his
daughter, Rachel Haas Gutin; and by her daughter and son-in-law,
Madeline and Mark Perri, and their son, David. She is also survived by her nephew and his wife, Marc and Sandi Scholnick, of Portland, Oregon; by her great-niece, Elizabeth Scholnick, and her mother, Nellie Scholnick, of New York; and by her numerous and loving Gutin relatives.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, July 20, 2014 at 11:00 am from the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Inc., 348 S. River Street, Wilkes-Barre, with Rabbi Roger Lerner officiating.
Interment will be in Temple B'nai B'rith Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Shiva will be observed at The Woodlands, 1073 Highway 315,Wilkes-Barre,7-9 pm Sunday and 2-4pm and 7-9 pm Monday.
