Dr. Lionel Bernson, of Dallas, died Thursday morning, February 6, 2020.
Born in Patterson, NJ, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Shirley Starke Bernson. He graduated from University of Pennsylvania and University of Chicago School of Medicine and served his country proudly in the Untied States Air Force. He and his wife had a flourishing private family therapist practice and touched many people. Being a well respected Psychiatrist, he ran the psychiatric Unit at Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC and was a admired professor at Rutgers. He retired from being the director of child and adolescent psychology and professor at UMDNJ. He served as a lay rabbi at Beth-Am in Teaneck NJ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mitzie of 67 years; beloved daughter, Sharon Laurel Bernson.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by children: David Bernson and his wife, Karen of Bolder, CO; Larry Bernson and his wife, Patty of Florida; Miriam Iris Bernson of Dallas; Marc Bernson and his wife, Jessica of Seattle, WA; Michelle Price of Easton, PA; sister-Madeline Kessler; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2020 at 1:00 pm in Cedar Park and Beth El Cemetery, 735 Forest Ave., Paramus NJ.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, 348 S. River St. Wilkes-Barre.
