Dr. Harold Roth, of Glenrock, NJ; formerly of Wilkes-Barre and died Friday morning, January 22, 2021 at home.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Sam and Esther Indig Roth and brother of the late Jerry Roth. At age 16, he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned his bachelor of science; he subsequently earned his master of science degree in solid state physics from University of Pennsylvania and his doctor of science degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Roth's professional work included positions at Raytheon, NASA, Allen Bradley and most recently as director of Geophysics for the Phillips Laboratory and director of Solid State Sciences at Rome Laboratory at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts where he held the rank of Brigadier General prior to retirement. Dr. Roth received many honors and awards including the George Lieb Harrison Scholarship, Philco Fellowship, NASA Award for Outstanding Contributions and the Senior Executive Service Presidential Meritorious Executive Rank Award presented to him by President George Bush.
He was a member of the American Physical Society, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Society of Sigma Xi and Board of Editors, Solid State Electronics Journal. He was past chairman of Society of Automotive Engineers Task Force on Automotive Solid State Electronics, Industrial Advisory Committee for the Sciences, Milwaukee School of Engineering and Lincoln Laboratory Advanced Electronics Technology Panel. Dr. Roth was a past member of SAE Design and Information Guides Subcommittee and NASA Advisory Committee on Electrophysics and referee of Journal of Applied Physics and Applied Physics Letters.
Outside his professional life, Harold served as president of the Beth Israel Temple in Milwaukee, WI. He was a craftsman in stained glass and an avid tinkerer and teacher, inspiring his grandchildren's love of science. He was known for his poetry, specializing in limericks and loved to play the mandolin.
In addition to his parents and brother, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Lorraine Mason who passed December 25, 2020.
He is survived by daughters Leslie Roth-Baransky (Dr. Yurij Baransky) of Glen Rock, NJ; Valerie Flashenberg (Richard) of Glen Rock, NJ and Stephanie Roth-Haberle (Sean) of Montclair, NJ; He will be sadly missed by them and his 8 loving grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at 1:00 pm from the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Inc. 348 S. River St. Wilkes-Barre, with Rabbi Dovid Kaplan officiating. Interment will follow in Ohav Zedek Cemetery, Hanover Twp.
