Dr. Leo Troy, 89, of West Orange, NJ, died Saturday, November 2, 2103, at home
Born in Wilkes-Barre, Sept 17, 1924 (Constitution Day) he was the son of the late Isaiah and Zelda Israel Troy and was a graduate of GAR High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, the European African Mideastern Campaign Medal and the Medal of Freedom. After the war, Leo entered Pennsylvania State University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa . He entered graduate school at Columbia University, where he earned his PhD in Economics, was a Professor at Rutgers University for 53 years and chairman of the economics department for many years. He won two Fulbright Scholarships to research the economics of labor unions in the United Kingdom, moving his family there for a year in 1962 and 1973. Dr. Troy was the author of two books, THE ALMANAC OF BUSINESS AND INDUSTRIAL FINANCIAL RATIOS and THE TWILIGHT OF THE OLD UNIONISM. He was quoted often in the NY Times, most recently, at the age of 88, in 2012, about the decline in union membership in the USA and worldwide.
He was a member of many civic, medical and religious organizations.
Dr. Troy was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his two older brothers, Wilber and Saul Troy.
He is survived by his children, Suzannah Beth Troy, Brooklyn, NY; son, Alexander Troy and his wife, Dale and their children, Ariel, Rachel and Abby Troy, all of Greenwich, CT; nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held, today, Sunday, November 3, 2013, at 3:00 pm at the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Inc., 348 S. River Street, Wilkes-Barre.
Interment will follow in Holche Yosher Cemetery, Hanover Twp.
Shiva will not be observed locally.
Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to charity of donor's choice.
Dr. Troy will be missed and remembered with great love and respect.
