Anita Rose Cherkes, 79, of Wilkes-Barre, formerly of Edwardsville, died Monday, May 29, 2017 in the Gardens at East Mountain.
Born in the Bronx, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Frances Lobel Cherkes and was a graduate of Forrest Hills High School, Wilkes College and New York University. She worked for many years at the Hoyt Library, as a clerical assistant and donated much of her time to the SPCA. Anita was a member of Temple B'nai B'rith, Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family Services, and Wyoming Valley Poetry Society. Her poetry has appeared in local newspapers and published in numerous books. She was named poet of the year at the Kirby Fine Arts Festival at Public Square in 2016.
She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by brother, William Cherkes; sister in law, Ilene Goldberg Cherkes and niece, Lori Cherkes Williams.
Anita is survived by her nephew, Charles (Chuck) Cherkes and his fiancee, Elyse Costello, Baltimore, MD.
Graveside Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 5, 2017 at 11:00 am in Temple B'nai Brith Cemetery, Hanover Twp., with Rabbi Roger Lerner officiating.
Arrangements by Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Inc. 348 S. River St. Wilkes-Barre.
Memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA in memory of Anita.
