ALFRED A. EDELSOHN July 1, 2014 Alfred A. Edelsohn of Scranton and Coconut Creek, Florida , 88, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Abramson Center for Jewish Life, North Wales, PA.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Leon and Ida Edelsohn, he obtained a masters degree from the University of Scranton. He served as a Navy radioman during World War II. He taught seventh grade science in the Scranton School District and years after his retirement, former students grown with children of their own would fondly great him, "Hello, Mr. Edelsohn". He also had a successful career as an insurance agent with AFLAC.
He was committed to Judaism and community service. He was past commander, Jewish War Veterans Sandy Weisberger Leon Kaplan Post # 165, chaired the scholarship committee and also had served on the board of directors of Jewish Family Services of NEPA. He was a long time member of Temple Israel. He volunteered at the VA Hospital many Christmas holidays, was a supporter of Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, and also helped adult learners of Hebrew. He had both the talent and passion for making memorable videos and was sought after by family, friends and professional group to capture events. While in Florida, he was the head of Wynmoor videographer club and produced several comedy spoofs.
Surviving are his wife Mitzi, North Wales, PA; children Dr. Gail Edelsohn (Henry Mann), Huntingdon Valley PA and Carol Sherman, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla; sister Renee Schectman and her sons Jay and Gary Shectman; grandchildren Jesse Kirkpatrick, Hannah Sherman, Tracy Sherman, Steven Sherman, Kyle Mann, Blake Mann, Jeff Mann, Lane Fisher; nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Inc., 348 S. River Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702 with services by Rabbi Raphael Nemetsky and Rabbi Dovid Saks.
Interment will follow in Ohav Zedek Cemetery, Rear 689 Main Road, Hanover Township, PA 18706.
Shiva will be observed at the home of Renee Schectman, 222 Colfax Ave, Scranton, today, 7 to 9 pm, Thursday 2 - 4 and 7 - 9, Friday 2 - 4 pm; and Sunday and Monday 2 - 4 pm and 7 - 9 pm.
