Stuart L. Abrams, 82, of Kingston, PA, passed away Monday, December 16, 2019, at Timber Ridge Health Care Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
Born October 27, 1937, in the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Sidney Abrams and Beth Fingeroth and the brother of the late Hermine Wigman.
Stu and his wife, the late Linda Leventhal Abrams, resided in Philadelphia after their marriage in 1962. They moved to Wilkes-Barre in 1970 to begin what would be a 25-year stint in the family business, Leventhal’s Men’s and Boys’ Apparel, in Nanticoke. In 1971 they moved to Kingston, where they raised their children and numerous pets. They spent many summers serving as the host home for their grandchildren while they attended the Wyoming Valley JCC day camp and for annual Passover seders and Thanksgiving dinners.
Stu was a graduate of Philadelphia public schools and took business courses at Temple University and Peirce College. He held numerous jobs over the years, from collecting newspapers and distributing circulars in his childhood wagon to selling insurance and serving as a census taker. Always good with numbers, he had a small tax-preparation business on the side. More recently, he was a long-distance driver, transporting Valley residents to and from out-of-town medical appointments and airports. He cherished his time on the road and the chance to engage in discussions about travel and life.
He served in the Army National Guard in Worcester, PA, for six years and kept in touch with a fellow guardsman for 55 years. He had been a long-time Freemason, a member of Temple Israel, and a bowler at the Jewish Community Center. He worked at the polls as a volunteer and election judge in his Kingston district for many years.
He is survived by his daughters Jayne (Keith) Dorton of Springfield, NJ, Rachel (Steven) Alterman of North Easton, MA, and Susan Pollack of Rockville, MD; grandchildren Lillian and Madelyn Pollack and Harry and Dylan Alterman; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Th funeral will be held at Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, 348 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre, at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be private. Shiva will be observed at the Woodlands Inn and Resort from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
