Jerome L. Cohen, Esquire

Our beloved Jerome Lionel Cohen, Esquire, of Nanticoke passed away on Monday, November 5, 2018 in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center with his loved ones by his side.

Born in Wilkes-Barre on January 25, 1934, he was the son of the late Morris and Hannah Shindel Cohen.

A graduate of Meyers High School, Jerry held a Bachelor of Science degree from the Temple University School of Business and Public Administration, where he majored in Accounting and was a member of the Honorary Accounting Society. He graduated from the Temple University School of Law in 1958 where he was active in the Legal Aid Society. He was also a member of Tau Epsilon Rho Legal Fraternity. While at Temple University he was employed as assistant to the comptroller for a period of five years. He was a member of the marching band in high school and college. Jerry was a member of Temple Israel, Wilke-Barre.

An esteemed attorney for almost 60 years, he was admitted to the Luzerne County Bar Association in 1959. He was a Free Mason. Working as a sole practitioner, he affiliated with various attorneys over the years. He served as Assistant District Attorney and then first Assistant District Attorney with District Attorney Patrick J. Toole; Member of the Board of Directors and Solicitor of Peoples National Bank of Edwardsville; Member and President of the local Tuberculosis Society as well as the First Vice President of the American Lung Association of Pennsylvania; Solicitor for the Borough of Courtdale and City of Nanticoke; First Assistant District Attorney with District Attorney Correale Stevens and then Interim District Attorney in 1994 after Stevens was appointed Common Pleas Judge. He closed his practice on Public Square in November of 2017. 

Jerry leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, the former Claire A. Lynch; children Howard D. (Karen) Cohen, Philadelphia; Tracy A (David) Zabrenski, Nanticoke; Mark D. Gusditis, Dorrance; grandchildren, Neil and wife Meredith, Stephen and fiancé Shikhee, and Kimberly Cohen, Taylor Zabrenski, Connor and Garrett Gusditis, his sister Sally Connor and her children Edward (Celia) Connor and Trudy (Billy) Doss and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, November 8, 2018, at 1:00PM at the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Inc. 348 S. River St. Wilkes-Barre. Interment will follow in Holche Yosher Cemetery, Lee Park Ave., Hanover Twp.

Shiva will be observed at 6 Kings Court, Nanticoke, Thursday from 6pm to 9pm and Sunday from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 9pm.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the members of the Nanticoke Ambulance, EMS and Fire Department and the staff at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center. Your compassion and care for not only our beloved but our family will never be forgotten.

There are not many people in this world that we can whole heartedly say were genuinely kind, dignified, trustworthy, passionate about their trade, truly enjoyed their work, always put their clients’ wellbeing first without concern for financial gain, found humor even in the grimmest of times, unconditionally loved his family and friends, and never did anything for the spotlight or recognition. If you knew him, you were blessed but if you didn’t, chances are you know someone whose life he has impacted.
