HERMAN RUBIN GREENBERG

Herman “Hank” Greenberg, 89, of Pennsauken, NJ, died Saturday, July 21, 2018, in Brighton Gardens of Middletown, NJ, with family by his side.
 
Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Julius and Bessie Lieb Greenberg and was a graduate of Coughlin High School, where he played two years of varsity basketball. He furthered his education at Mansfield State Teachers College (now Mansfield University) where he played varsity basketball and baseball.
 
He taught History and coached basketball and baseball for 16 years at Audubon High School, Audubon, NJ and as freshman basketball coach, his team became the only undefeated team in the school’s history with a 20-0 record in 1961. Hank was assistant coach, when Audubon won their only NJ Group III State Basketball Championship in 1963 and as head baseball coach from 1961-1976, his team record was 211-108-4, capturing 7 conference championships, 5 sectional titles and the school’s first state championship in 1975. Hank was the first public school coach to be selected “Coach of the Year”, in 1975, by the South Jersey Baseball Coaches Association. Hank has been inducted into several Halls of Fame and was considered one of the better windmill pitchers in the 50s and 60s and a coaching legend.

In 2013, Audubon High School honored Hank, unveiling his portrait in the school library and the year of his retirement (1992), the Boro of Audubon named the high school baseball field in his honor.
 
Hank was a member of Congregation Ohav Zedek and many civic, sports and religious organizations.
 
Hank is survived by his sister, Sandra Adler, Kingston; nephews, Steve and Jeff Adler and niece Marci Cohen.
 
Funeral service will be conducted on Monday, July 23, 2018, at 2:00 pm at the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Inc. 348 S. River St. Wilkes-Barre, with Rabbi Dovid Kaplan officiating. Interment will be in Anshe Emes Cemetery, Plains.
 
Shiva will be observed at the Woodlands Inn and Resort, Wilkes-Barre, 7-9 pm on Monday, July 23, 2018, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Tuesday and 2-4 on Wednesday.
 
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, may be made to Congregation Ohav Zedek.
