FRIEDA HIRSCHHORN Obituary

Frieda Waxman Hirschhorn was born on March 8, 1924 in Philadelphia to Mariesa Crupara Waxman and Morris Waxman.

Frieda’s family moved to New York when she was a toddler. They lived in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.

One of Frieda’s fondest memories was living in Coney Island one block from the beach. She enjoyed being close to all the amusement parks and had a very happy childhood.

Frieda graduated from Jamaica High School (Queens). She loved to write poetry and sing and participated in school programs including chorus and theater. She hoped for a career in show business and took voice lessons with Eddie Miller, who put on many productions that Frieda happily participated in.

Unfortunately, Frieda’s mother did not share her enthusiasm for show biz, but Frieda persisted and continued on her venture in community theater. When she was 15, she made her debut at New York City’s Town Hall.

Upon graduating high school, Frieda worked for a major real estate conglomerate and oversaw many aspects of the business.

She married Seymour Hirschhorn on June 23, 1945 and they became proud parents of Linda Susan and Wendy Ellen.

Frieda and Seymour moved from Syosset, N.Y. to Wilkes-Barre in 1969. Seymour founded and ran, Slushy, Inc., a restaurant equipment company. They were happily married for 47 years upon Seymour’s death in 1992.

Frieda was active in Temple Israel, Jewish War Veterans, Irem Temple, and Teens do Care, a program of the Jewish Family Services that paired teens and seniors for one-on-one conversations. Frieda participated in countless plays and productions produced by the Jewish Community Center where she also served as an exemplary volunteer. She was an avid mah-jongg player and an accomplished home cook, who specialized in Romanian fare.

In 2013, Frieda relocated to Gwynedd Healthcare Center in Lansdale, Pa. where she participated in myriad activities and received exceptional and loving care.

Frieda is survived by her daughters, Linda Schwartz (Ted Schwartz) and Wendy Hirschhorn (Robert Brody), and by her sister Rhoda Feldman. She was grandmother of Jennie and Richard Pisnoy, Paulette and Stu Strauss, Pam and Scott Rosenberg, and Scott Schwartz and great grandmother of Benjamin, Simone, Max, Lily, Samuel, and Rachel.

Frieda wanted everyone to know that she had a wonderful life.

Graveside Funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, December 1, 2019, at 11:00 am, in Temple Israel Cemetery, Swoyersville, with Rabbi Larry Kaplan officiating.

Arrangements by Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Inc. Wilkes-Barre.
